The Son of Kisma

Rabbi Yosei Ben Kisma was a Tannah from the third generation of Tannaim (the Mishna sages).

The Mishnah in Avot tells the story of Rabbi Yosei Ben Kisma who was once walking and on his way he met a man, who greeted him and then asked: “Rabbi, where do you come from?”

Rabbi Yosei replied: “I come from a large town of scholars and scribes.”

The man continued to ask: “Would you like to come live with us and I will endow you with millions of golden coins, precious gems and pearls?”

“No, my son,” answered Rabbi Yosei. “Even if you offer me all the gold, silver precious gems and pearls of the entire world, I will still choose to live in a place of Torah. This is because when a person dies not the gold or silver nor the precious gems or pearls accompany him to Heaven. The only thing that accompanies him is his Torah and good deeds.”

Rabbi Yosei is buried in Meron.
