Rabbi Yonatan the son of Uziel was a Tannah in the first generation of Tannaim (the Mishna sages). He was the greatest disciple of Hillel the Elder.
The Mishna in Succa states that when Rabbi Yonatan would learn Torah, any bird that flew over his head would burn, because of the angels that surrounded him to listen to his Torah.
Rabbi Yonatan translated the Neviim (Prophets of the Bible) into Aramaic. His translation is called Targum Yonatan (the translation of Yonatan).
While he was working on the translation, a voice came out of Heaven asking: “Who is the one who revealed the secrets of Torah to mankind?”
Rabbi Yonatan replied: “It is I who revealed the secrets, but it is well known to You that all that I did was not for my own honor or my family’s honor but rather for the honor of G-d and for the cause of preventing disputes among the people of Israel.”
Rabbi Yonatan ben Uziel is buried in Amuka. Prayers at his tomb are known to be highly effective for those seeking a shidduch (marriage partner).
