Rabbah was an Amorah from the forth generation of Amoraim (the sages of the Gemarah), who lived in Babylon. He was the son of Rav Yosef Bar Chammah and a disciple of Rav Nachman.

Rabbah is famous for his many halachic disputes with Abayei, which in most of them Rabbah gained the upper hand.

Rabbah used to say about himself; “Three things have I requested of Heaven, and two of them was I granted; the wisdom of Rav Hunah and the riches of Rav Chisdah are the two things I received, but the modesty of Rabbah Bar Chunah I did not receive.”

Rabbah used his wealth to help his fellow Jews, by paying off the King and thus preventing harsh decrees against the Jews.

After Abayei passed away, Rabbah took his place as head of the big Yeshiva of Pumpeditah.

In the Gemarah it says that when Rabbah passed away, the waters of the Tigris River boiled and the two riversides collided.

Rabbah is buried in the Galilee near Tsfat.
