Rabbi Elazar the son of Rashbi (Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai) was a Tannah from the fifth generation of Tannaim (the Mishna sages).

Rabbi Elazar hid in a cave along with his father, Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai, who was forced to hide after being accused of criticizing the Roman authorities. They hid in a cave for 13 years, in which they learned Torah and Kabbalah, ate from a carob tree and drank from a spring of water, which both miraculously appeared outside of the cave. Rabbi Elazar and his father, who wanted to keep their clothes in decent shape, sat most of the day covered with sand up to their necks and immersed themselves in holy studies of Torah. Only when it was time for prayer would they shake off the sand and dress in their clothes.

Many sayings in the Zohar are mentioned in the name of Rabbi Elazar.

Rabbi Elazar the son of Rashbi is buried in Meron next to his father.
