Rabbi Bna’ah the Amorah lived during the last generation of the Tannaim (the sages of the Mishna) and the 1st generation of the Amorraim (the sages of the Gemarah).

Rabbi Bna’ah had a Beit- Midrash (house for learning Torah) in Tiberious, where Rabbi Yochannan, his greatest disciple, taught as well.

Rabbi Bna’ah had great wisdom and was an expert in determining the exact location of grave sites, thus pointing out the precise area in which the prohibition of “tumat met” – the defiling that occurs when someone comes in contact with a corpse or human remains – applies. Amongst the tombs he visited was also Mearat Hamachpela, in which, according to the Gemara, he spoke to Avraham Avinu.

Rabbi Bna’ah the Amorah is buried in the Galilee between Meron and Tsfat.
