Rabbi Yosef Saragussi was born in Saragossa, Spain.

In the year 1492, Rabbi Yosef, together with hundreds of thousands of Jews, were banished from Spain. Rabbi Yosef moved to Egypt, where he had many disciples and followers. Later on, Rabbi Yosef moved to Israel, where he served as rabbi and head of the community in Tsfat.

It is told that one time when Rabbi Yosef was on his way to pray at the tomb of Rabbi Yehudah Bar Ilaei, Eliyahu Hanavi was revealed to him and they learned Torah together. After this incident Rabbi Yosef asked that after his passing, he would be buried next to Rabbi Yehudah’s grave, where he saw Eliyahu Hanavi.

Indeed Rabbi Yosef Saragussi is buried in Ein Zeitim, near Tsfat, right next to the tomb of Rabbi Yehudah Bar Ilaei.
